It may look like our first tropical storm of the year, but the amazing winds along the southeast coast are being created by a sub-tropical low that has formed off the Cape Hatteras coast and moved SSW over the past 2 days. If you are confused about what the difference is between a tropical storm and a sub-tropical storm, then here is a great article explaining the definitions. The National Hurricane Center could choose to name this system and it would be our first name of the 2007 season to be used in May! "Andrea" would be the storms name if that takes place. This has happened before and with the way this storm is developing off the South Carolina coast, it would not be unlikely for this to happen again. Here is a high resolution picture of our coastal storm. Sure looks like a tropical low! 2007 is gonna be a crazy year.
